California air resource management board (CARB) of the United States approved the air transmission measures to reduce formaldehyde emission from composite wood products in April 2008. On July 7, 2010, the US Congress issued the s.1660 "formaldehyde standard act for composite wood products" signed by the president, which came into effect on January 3, 2011. The act is based on carb's formaldehyde act in California. It is implemented in phases and more stringent standards have been implemented since July 1, 2011.
The specific requirements of this law are as follows:
① Hardwood plywood with veneer core
Formaldehyde emission should not exceed 0.05 ppm.
② Hardwood plywood with composite core
The formaldehyde emission shall not exceed 0.08 ppm, which shall come into effect 180 days after the promulgation of the regulation until June 30, 2012; the formaldehyde emission shall not exceed 0.05 ppm from July 1, 2012.
③ Medium density fiberboard
The formaldehyde emission shall not exceed 0.21 ppm, which shall come into effect 180 days after the promulgation of the regulation until June 30, 2011; the formaldehyde emission shall not exceed 0.11 ppm from July 1, 2011.
④ Thin body medium density fiberboard
The formaldehyde emission shall not exceed 0.21 ppm, which shall come into effect 180 days after the promulgation of the regulation until June 30, 2012; the formaldehyde emission shall not exceed 0.13 ppm from July 1, 2012.
⑤ Particleboard
The formaldehyde emission shall not exceed 0.18 ppm, which shall come into effect 180 days after the promulgation of the regulation until June 30, 2011; the formaldehyde emission shall not exceed 0.09 ppm from July 1, 2011.
